York St John University is proud to be the headline sponsor of the YAYA Awards, supporting the valuable work of the QED Foundation. By celebrating the remarkable achievements of all nominees, we aim to inspire and empower young Asian people to keep pushing the boundaries of success.

At York St John, we have a rich history of transforming lives through education. A commitment to providing access to education for all has been at the core of our mission since 1841. With official ‘Sanctuary’ status, we see our role as something bigger than an education provider, and our students thrive in a close-knit community that fosters a strong sense of belonging.

Inclusivity lies at the heart of our university, and we value the social and cultural diversity that everyone brings to our community. We continuously strive to enrich our community by tackling inequalities, promoting fairness and challenging prejudice.

York St John University is recognised nationally for our work to widen participation in higher education. Our inclusive offer scheme has been endorsed as a sector-leading way of breaking down barriers and making higher education accessible to those who may not feel that university is a possibility for them. This approach has had a remarkable impact; 74% of our students now come from backgrounds that are underrepresented in UK Higher Education.

We know that race inequalities are a problem across the higher education sector, and achieving race equality is central to our social justice mission. That is why York St John University has committed to a five-year action plan to become an anti-racist university. We are one of only 37 institutions to hold a Race Equality Charter (REC) award. In November 2022, we were conferred a REC bronze award by AdvanceHE, recognising the robust plan we have in place to continue to improve equality.

ACHIEVEMENT IN THE ARTS & CREATIVE INDUSTRIES

The National Science and Media Museum, in the heart of Bradford, is a place to explore the science and culture of image and sound technologies and their impact on our lives.

With internationally significant collections in the fields of photography, film, television, gaming and sound, the museum’s talented team of curators and explainers create galleries, exhibitions and events that fuel the imagination and inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and artistic creators. And Pictureville cinema, which includes the region’s biggest IMAX screen, showcases the magic of moving images from around the world in Bradford, the first UNESCO City of Film.

A visit to the museum will delight and surprise: Wonderlab is a fully interactive gallery which explores the scientific principles of light and sound, and recent temporary exhibitions have included Top Secret: From Ciphers to Cybersecurity, focusing on the ingenuity of secret communications, and Switched On, a celebration of 100 years of the BBC and 40 years of Channel 4.

The museum is currently temporarily closed until summer 2024 to undergo a £6m once-in-a-generation transformation. Thanks to support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and money raised by National Lottery players, the major Sound and Vision project will create two new galleries, an additional passenger lift and an enhanced foyer space. Pictureville Cinema remains open seven days a week, with an enhanced programme. You can follow the transformation via the museum’s website and social media channels.

We are delighted to be supporting the YAYA award for Achievement in Arts and Creative Industries for two key reasons. Firstly, we want to ensure our region’s creativity and culture is reflected and celebrated in the work we do – whether it is through exhibitions, making connections between our collection and people’s personal stories, or in this case sponsoring an award celebrating excellence. Secondly, we are committed to inspiring, supporting and encouraging young people with opportunities in the cultural sector. It is essential for the future of our creative industries that we nurture the thriving talent that exists in Yorkshire.

Janan first opened its doors to the public in 2011 with an impressive department store in West Yorkshire and received an overwhelming response from the public. The vision continues to grow, and today Janan Group of companies has a leading worldwide presence, working collaboratively with designers and brands across the globe with a reputation of trust, exceptional quality and excellent customer service.

Janan is a celebration of style, culture and family all under one roof. Our heritage is steeped rich in wonderful journeys and stories; with an intention to bridge the gap between continents and generations, and accommodating both traditional and modern approaches.

ACHIEVEMENT IN HEALTH/MENTAL HEALTH & HEALTHCARE

The University of York is delighted to be supporting the Yorkshire Asian Young Achievers Award for Achievement in Health, Mental Health and Healthcare. The University of York is the home of enquiring minds, inspiring teachers, pioneering researchers and committed professional services staff, all of whom are determined to make the world a better place. Our founding values of excellence, equality and opportunity for all, anchored by the highest academic standards, are as true today as they were when the University of York opened its doors.

Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy speaks to the core of our values and we are committed to creating a working, learning, social and living environment that will enable all our staff and students to achieve their potential, whilst they celebrate diverse cultures, knowledge and identities and are encouraged to make a positive contribution to the city, region and beyond.

We are committed to providing exceptional learning experiences that stay with our students for the rest of their lives, enabling them to flourish within and beyond their studies. Our well-established widening participation programmes provide an opportunity for learners from across the country, and particularly those from Yorkshire, to gain an insight into university study. We are continuously growing as a University community and offer a range of career development opportunities in research, teaching, professional and support services as well as inclusive campus facilities, services and networks to support staff and students from diverse backgrounds.

We have a range of activities that engage with the wider community in which we live, work and learn, and pride ourselves on forging local partnerships within York and local counties, working particularly closely with schools, colleges and communities. Our new campaign, York Unlimited, highlights our mission to improve lives, drawing together our global community of staff, students, alumni and the people and businesses of our city. The campaign supports the delivery of projects that enable brilliant minds to break barriers, overcome limitations and think differently to solve the challenges of the world today. With six priority areas, it is important that these include ‘enabling every student to shine’ and ‘transforming mental health’.

This provides a sense as to why the University of York is so delighted to work with the QED Foundation, to support the Yorkshire Asian Young Achievers Award and sponsor the Award for Achievement in Health, Mental Health and Healthcare.

ACHIEVEMENT AS A YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR/PRIVATE SECTOR

Headquartered in Bradford since 1899, Morrisons is a British food retailer with around 100,000 colleagues in 497 stores serving millions of customers every week.

As a proud Yorkshire business we’re delighted to be supporting the YAYAs and specifically the Achievement in Private Sector award.

We recognise the important role the private sector plays in this region, creating jobs and opportunities for young people and think it’s important for us to back an award which champions the success of people at the start of their careers.

The finalists have made great achievements in their chosen roles and been dedicated in pursuit of their goals and we wish them all the best.

The skills and dedication of our own colleagues makes Morrisons. Foodmakers and shopkeepers at heart, we have over 9,000 trained butchers, bakers, fishmongers, cheesemongers and other skilled in-store specialists making more and more food in our stores.

We have our own sites making meat, fruit & veg, fish, bakery and fresh food products – 20 in all – and are unique in preparing and making more than half of the fresh food sold in our stores.

Morrisons is becoming even more competitive by cutting prices on groceries and continuing to offer great value on good quality products. We tailor the offer of each one of our stores to local tastes and demographics.

We also offer popular services including cafés, pharmacies, dry cleaners and over 300 petrol stations with further services being added all the time.

ACHIEVEMENT IN SCHOOL OR COLLEGE

YAYAs sponsors

We are  proud to be sponsoring the Achievement in School or College category at the YAYA awards. They give much deserved recognition to the many incredible young people who attend schools or college and who are making outstanding efforts every day throughout the year. They are an inspiration to all of us, and these awards go some way to showing our appreciation for these young people and just how much they are valued by the their school, college and communities.

Bradford is a vibrant, dynamic and diverse district. We have a rich history and a bright future: over half a million people live here and we have roots all over the world. We are a big economy with globally successful businesses. We are the youngest city in the UK, we have a growing population, and we’re ambitious for our young people. We want all our young people to be able to add to our skilled and enterprising workforce, sharing in inclusive growth and creating prosperity and opportunity for all. So the YAYA awards, with their special focus on promoting socially-mobile young achievers who have overcome deprivation and disadvantage, or have broken through traditional barriers to progress, is something that we really support.

This is a challenging time for education in our district. Our children and young people have had to endure huge disruption due to COVID but have shown tremendous determination and resilience to continue their studies throughout the pandemic. We are determined to do all we can to support them through it. Our Opportunity Area status continues to provide funding that enables schools to boost the life chances of pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds.

We want to congratulate everyone who has supported the awards and those who have been nominated. We all need to acknowledge the fantastic work that many young people do, not just those who have been nominated, on their journey to achievement. They are all winners, and the YAYA Awards help us celebrate this.

ACHIEVEMENT IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR

In Border Force, roles are diverse and include checking passengers and freight arriving in the UK by air and sea; conducting intelligence-led searches for prohibited, counterfeit or restricted goods; and supporting the wider Home Office agenda through work in high-profile areas such as counter terrorism, tackling organised crime, modern slavery and human trafficking.

ACHIEVEMENT IN THE NOT-FOR-PROFIT SECTOR

Over 150 years ago our founder, Thomas Barnardo, promised to support children in need of help – regardless of their background or circumstances.

Today we continue to keep that promise. Last year we supported over 357,000 children, young people, parents, and carers through 794 services and partnerships. We change children’s lives and the system around them, for the better.

That’s why we’re proud to be supporting the Yorkshire Young Asian Awards again tonight. These awards recognise the efforts of young people who have broken through barriers and gone on to thrive.

Barnardo’s runs services across Yorkshire, supporting hundreds of children and young people in the region who are experiencing challenges at home and at school. This includes families who are caring for a child with autism and have Urdu as their first language.

In Bradford we deliver services such as: providing support to families living in poverty, parenting support for children with Autism and Special Educational Needs, Early Years Parenting Support, Emotional well-being support for children and wider family support for families where children are in the care of the local authority.

We’re also there for young people across Yorkshire more broadly, teaching key life skills and supporting them to access training, education, and employment – and helping to reduce offending and anti-social behaviour.

Across the UK, children continue to face complex challenges, including a growing crisis in children’s mental health, rising numbers going into the care system, and increasing risks online. 157 years since we began, our work is more vital than ever.

We are focused on achieving better outcomes for more children, through stronger families, safer childhoods, and positive futures. With the dedication and expertise of our colleagues, volunteers and our partners in government, business, and philanthropy, we will continue to bring care, love and hope to the children who need us most.

ACHIEVEMENT IN OVERCOMING LIFE OBSTACLES

Students at the University of Bradford benefit from – and are part of – teaching and research that harnesses technology for the good of society.

They learn from academic and industry experts who are shaping the future of their sectors in world-class facilities – we’ve invested millions of pounds in high-tech learning environments, such as our motion capture studio and our new School of Management facilities.

Our curriculum is designed with input from industry experts and partners, which means our students develop skills that are highly valued by employers – along with plenty of hands-on practical experience. Many of our courses have professional, statutory or regulatory body accreditation or approval, giving graduates the best possible start to their careers.

During their time with us our students can become the very best version of themselves. The University is a place where students can expand their mind and make lifelong friends; where they can grow, learn, experience. Where they can belong, and we support them every step of the way.

The Times and Sunday Times have named the University of Bradford as the UK’s University of the Year for Social Inclusion 2020. This prestigious national award recognises Bradford’s outstanding impact on social inclusion that ensures all students, irrespective of their background, are supported to achieve their potential and go on to achieve success.

With over 50 years of academic excellence behind us as a University, we continue to grow our international reputation, course provision, and research impact.

We have always been pioneers in developing new course subjects and modes of teaching, reflecting and anticipating the needs of employers, our students, and of society as a whole; our course provision and research strategy is designed in response to the changing business, social, scientific and environmental landscape.

Today our associations and networks span the globe; from strong links to leading local and national employers, to academic partner institutions, to the World Technology Universities Network, we are an outward facing institution committed to the creation, dissemination, and application of knowledge for the benefit of global society. We have an alumni community of more than 140,000 graduates in over 175 countries worldwide.

VISION

To become the No 1 corporate inclusive and diverse citizen in the district, a force for civic pride and good, a provider of hope, aspiration and employment for local players and supporters.

HISTORY

The Bradford Bulls are an iconic Rugby League club brand. In one guise or another it has a proud history dating back to the 1870s, being founder members of the Northern Union and indeed the Super League, with a glittering trophy cabinet. In particular, between 1996 and 2006, it was the undisputed pre-eminent Rugby League club in the northern hemisphere, winning domestic trophies and cups on numerous occasions, culminating in three World Club titles. Crowds regularly averaged 14,000 plus and the club was a leading light in the city.

CURRENT

The club currently competes in the part-time, semi-professional Championship competition, one level below the elite, full-time Super League competition.

Nevertheless, the club remains one of the Rugby League’s most powerful and vibrant participants, with proud and passionate supporters. Even today, the club is one of only four to lift the Grand Final Trophy and has also won three World Club Challenges this century. The Bulls Women’s team won the 2017 Challenge Cup and the Super League title and the club have run a Wheelchair team since 2009.
In late 2019 a group of local people, with the best interests of the club and the city at heart, and with proven skill and competency in the industry, were approached to take the club forward. The clear and unequivocal intention is to find a way to bring the club back to the city, and to restore the club to its former standing.

The current leadership group contains a former CEO of the RFL, a full-time volunteer CEO and Co-Owners who also volunteer, every week, at the club. All 3 Directors are lifelong fans and proud Bradfordians who were born and still live within approximately 3 miles of our stadium at Odsal.
This new cohort of leaders and volunteers have taken forward the challenge of rehabilitating the club, reputationally and indeed financially. Considerable six figure sums have been committed, in order to begin to turn the club around. The main substance of the offer, in addition to a significant financial commitment, is exceptionally strong industry expertise, integrity and values.
Uniquely and proudly, for a semi-professional Rugby League club, alongside our Charitable Marketing Arm, the Bradford Bulls Foundation, who interact with in excess of 70,000 schoolchildren every year, we currently run 9 sides, as follows:

• Men’s 1st Team
• Women’s 1st Team
• Men’s Reserves Team,
• Wheelchair Team (women and men)
• Physical Disability Team (women and men)
• Learning Disability Team (women and men)
• Women’s Under 19’s
• Boys Academy (Under 18’s)
• Boys Scholarship (Under 16’s)

YAYA’s

Community partnerships are really important to myself and HSBC UK Brand. We have loved the impact that delivering Financial Education sessions to many schools across the district had had, together with presenting them with many awards for all their hard work in learning how to manage their money better and sharing this knowledge with their parents and families.  We have many complimentary sessions that really help support Local Businesses and give something back to our Community that is why it is so important for us to be part of this prestige event.
